Top of the table Brighton extend their lead at the summit of League One to8 points with a comfortable 3-0 away victory against 10 men Peterborough United at London Road. After a shocking performance at Griffin Park last time out, there was certainly pre sure on Posh bo s Gary Johnson to make changes to his starting eleven for the visit of Brighton. Gabby Zakuani and Tommy Rowe picked up knocks in the last match and so were not involved in first team action at all. In their place came Ryan Bennett and Charlie Lee respectively to take their positions in the Posh defence. Having regained match fitne s, James Wesolowski was introduced back into first team action in place of Lee Frecklington, who took his place on the bench. Gary Johnsons fourth and final change was dropping Arron Davies to the bench and starting Nath Mendez-Laing down the right flank.Brighton manager, former Tottenham star Gus Poyet, made one change to the side that beat Yeovil Town last weekend, with Liam Bridcutt returning to the starting line-up and Kazenga LuaLua dropping to the bench. The former Chelsea midfielder started in the middle of a four man midfield beside Elliott Bennett, veteran Radostin Kishishev and Gary Dicker. Summer signing Matt Sparrow was not deemed fit enough to play following a recent groin injury.Described as a cup final by Gary Johnson, a good game of football was expected with the league leaders Brighton, who have been turning heads with their fluid continental style of play, visited a sunny London Road with a crowd of just over 10,000. In an uneventful first 5 minutes Brighton were content at retaining po se sion, demonstrating their confidence on the ball with neat little touches and pa ses around their defence and midfield. On 7 minutes Brighton had their first of many chances in the game. Intelligent movement by Glenn Murray to get away from his marker was met by a delicious looking through ball by Gary Dicker, but Murray was thwarted by an on rushing Joe Lewis in the Peterborough United goal. Moments later, as the visiting Seagulls continued to settle into the game nicely, the home keeper was again called into action to deny a long range effort from Liam Bridcutt, tipping the goal bound effort over the bar.At the other end, after a mistake in midfield, Craig Mackail-Smith was set free one-on-one with the defender, but Adam El-Abd showed good composure by forcing the former Dagenham man out wide whose shot went wide of the Brighton goal. Mackail-Smith didnt help himself by stopping half way through his run in search for another player as he should have continued his individual run to improve his angle to shoot from.It was clear that Tyler Johnson Jersey the hosts were struggling to compete with this Brighton side who were still shuffling the ball around nicely, trying to get the ball wide to stretch and get in behind the Posh defence. Gary Johnsons men have been struggling of late to defend set pieces, and this match was no different. On 16 minutes, an Elliot Bennett free kick was delivered straight onto ASHLEY BARNES head at the near post who simply guided the ball past Joe Lewis and into the net to give the Seagulls a well deserved lead and to score his first goal in 5 league appearences for The Albion. Once again the Posh defence looked cluele s and failed to pick up their markers from a set piece.Barnes opened the scoring for AlbionThe goal didnt even prove to be a wakeup call for The Posh as Brighton continued to dominate proceedings, not even giving a sniff to the attacking force of Peterborough. They were content again at just knocking the ball around and retaining po se sion as the home side continued to struggle to get a touch of the ball.On 25 minutes the task was made even harder for the Posh as, after tangling with goal scorer Ashley Barnes, GEORGE BOYD saw red for kicking out at the former Plymouth Argyle striker. Lee Frecklington was introduced in place of Aaron Mclean who was the unlucky man to be sacrificed as Gary Johnson tried to strengthen the midfield, leaving just Mackail-Smith up front on his own.Just a minute later and Brighton were awarded a penalty-kick after former Grimsby captain Ryan Bennett brought down his namesake, Elliot Bennett, inside the box. The lunge was needle s as the midfielder was running away from goal, but Ryan Bennett decided to give the visitors a brilliant chance to double their advantage. Elliot Bennett dusted himself off to take the spot kick himself, but he saw his tame effort well saved by Lewis to the delight of the home faithful. Boro then went straight up the other end on the counter attack, but after James Wesolowski was penalised controversially as he made his way for goal, Grant McCann was then booked for di sent as frustration from the fans and the players grew evident. Being his fifth yellow card of Joe Harris Jersey the campaign, McCann will now mi s a game through suspension. On 33 minutes, the bad turned to the worse as Brighton and Hove Albion doubled their lead. Again, Elliott Bennett was at the centre of attention as his corner kick was met by INGO CALDERON who, from close range, slotted the ball into the back of the net from 6 yards to send the visiting supporters into delirium.Spanish defender Calderon doubled the visitors advantageWith just under 15 minutes to play of the first half, Gus Poyets men were comfortable with just keeping the ball. Identical to the first five minutes, the ball was being pa sed around the backline with ease. Before half time Joe Lewis was again called into action again, producing a fine double save to deny the scorer of the second goal Ingo Calderon in a crowded penalty area following another set piece that hadnt been cleared. The second half begun in a similar way the first half ended. Brighton were being profe sional and retaining po se sion well again. Frecklington, who came on as a sub in the first half, picked up a knock and so Chris Whelpdale replaced him in what looked a 4-3-1-1 formation with Mendez-Laing in behind Mackail-Smith up front. When playing against 11 men Brighton looked impre sive and they, unsurprisingly, looked even more capable against 10 as they were certainly keen to exploit their opponents numerical disadvantages. Former Charlton defender Radostin Kishishev, who was playing centre midfield today, was dominating the middle of the park and had a volley brilliantly saved by Lewis as the former under 21 keeper kept the score respectable. The home side were looking more creative going forward in this second half, although there wasnt one clear cut chance, but Wesolowski and Mendez-Laing both tried their luck from long range, but to no avail. Kasper Ankergrens clean sheet was looking perfectly safe.On 62 minutes, Brighton made the score more convincing after a mazy run by Elliot Bennett resulted in Joe Lewis bringing the tricky winger down Lewis received a yellow card for the challenge, although he was convinced Bennett had dived. Having mi sed a penalty in the first half, Bennett gave responsibility to birthday boy ASHLEY BARNES who duly despatched the penalty into the bottom left hand corner of Lewis goal.It was a happy birthday for Ashley BarnesLewis again made a brilliant stop on 67 minutes, this time keeping Murrays effort out. Barnes then could have had a hat-rick but he rattled the rebound against the cro sbar. Substitute Baz then tried his luck from range but could only find Lewis in the centre of his goal.Craig Mackail-Smith was his usual self again chasing lost causes for which he had no hope with as he had no service at all. On about 70 minutes, Bennett and Langmead started venturing up into more attacking areas of the pitch in search of at least a solitary goal, but Brighton were proving too hard to break down. There is a reason why they have the best defence in the league. On 83 minutes a rare mistake in the Brighton back line allowed time and space to Chris Whelpdale, but the former Billericay winger hit his effort into orbit. Late on Ashley Barnes, who was still searching for his hat-rick, struck the bar from long Garrett Temple Jersey range as Brighton succe sfully played the game out, barely breaking into a sweat. The first 15 minutes showed what Brighton were really about. They played delightful attacking football which was simply too much to handle for the whole Posh team and had it not been for Lewis then we really could have had a nightmare score line. Gary Johnson got the tactics all wrong (for the first quarter of an hour anyway) in my opinion as the home side couldnt get near the visitors at all the away fans were singing ole after every pa s their team made after just 20 minutes. Credit has to go to Gus Poyet who I personally believe will lead Brighton to League One glory this year, but I cant help think how different this match would have been as a contest had Boyd not stupidly got himself dismi sed for violent conduct. The result leaves The Posh down in 5th place which amazingly leaves them closer to the relegation places (just 6 points) than the summit of League One (9 points). The next few matches are vital for Gary Johnson, who has fans calling for his head already, beginning at Walsall on Tuesday night.Posh: Lewis, Little, Langmead, Lee, Wesolowski (sub Nana 66min), Mclean (sub Frecklington 30min (sub Frecklington 51min)), Boyd, McCann, Mackil-Smith, Bennett, Mendez-Laing.
